CLEP · FOR PARENTS AND GUARDIANS

Will that CLEP score actually count?

Passing a CLEP exam doesn’t guarantee credit. The college your student attends decides three things — check them before test day.

The three questions

No data
  1. 1. Does the college award credit for this exam and score?

    No data

Choose a college to see what our reviewed data says. Credit is decided by each college, not by the exam.

  2. 2. Which course or elective credit does it count as?

    No data

Reviewed data here does not name the course a score equals. Ask the registrar which course — or elective — the award represents.

  3. 3. Does it fit the intended degree, or overlap other credit?

    No data

Not answered by reviewed data: whether the award counts toward a specific degree, or overlaps AP, dual enrollment or other credit, depends on the program. Ask before testing.

YOUR NEXT STEP

Confirm CLEP credit before your student tests

A checklist for one college and exam. It records research, not credit: nothing here is added to coursework.

  1. Open the college’s current CLEP or credit-by-exam policy (registrar or admissions page) and note its date.
  2. Write down the minimum score the college requires for this exam.
  3. Write down which course — or elective — the college awards for that score, and how many credits.
  4. Ask whether that course counts toward the intended degree, or only as general elective credit.
  5. Check for overlap with AP, dual enrollment or other credit the student already has.
  6. Ask about caps on exam credit and when official CLEP scores must be sent.

Official sources

  • College Board CLEP — exam list, test centers and its college credit-policy search.
  • The college’s registrar or admissions “credit by exam” page — the only source for its award and minimum score.
  • The intended degree’s program sheet or catalog — whether the course counts toward the degree.
